DDx

• Artrose (degeneratieve gewrichtsaandoening) of inflammatoire artrose
• Bindweefselziekte, bijv. Reumatoïde artritis, systemische lupus erythematosus, sclerodermie, het syndroom van Sjögren, volwassen ziekte van Still
• Seronegatieve spondyloartropathie, bijv. Reactieve artritis (syndroom van Reiter), artritis psoriatica, spondylitis ankylopoetica, inflammatoire darmaandoening
• Infectie, bijvoorbeeld Staphylococcus aureus septische artritis, gonokokkenartritis, endocarditis, hepatitis B of hepatitis C, parvovirus B19, ziekte van Lyme, rubella of post-rubella vaccinatie
• Kristalgeïnduceerd, bijvoorbeeld jicht, pseudogout
• Trauma
• Andere gewrichtsaandoeningen, bijv. Charcot (neuropathisch) gewricht, sarcoïdose, tumor, paraneoplastisch syndroom (bijv. Hypertrofische pulmonale osteoartropathie, leukemie), avasculaire necrose, amyloïdose, coagulopathie, sikkelcelziekte, Henoch-Schönlein purpura, recidiverende polychondritis, Behçet-syndroom, Ziekte van Whipple, palindroom reuma, ochronose (alkaptonurie)
• Andere niet-gewrichtsaandoeningen, bijv. Tendinitis, bursitis, polymyalgia-reumatica, sympathische reflexdystrofie
